Infrared Spectroscopy
Shows you what bonds are present in a molecule.
Infrared waves vary in frequency and different bonds vibrate at these frequencies.
By vibrating they absorb the infrared waves.
This creates an absorption spectrum. For more on infrared waves go to Waves
You will get given a table that looks like this:

Use the peaks (sharp drops) to compare to the table - this enables you to deduce what bonds are there
By doing this you can find the functional group enabling you to deduce the organic compound type
Beware of the change of scale in the x axis
You cannot deduce what the empirical formula is or how many bonds there are.
The finger print section is used to find this out but you won't be asked to use this section.
